AGCO Fines Great Canadian Entertainment for Allowing Minors to Gamble
The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) recently imposed a penalty of CAD 151,000 on Great Canadian Entertainment for alleged failures at three of its casinos. The fine was a result of instances where the casino properties reportedly did not prevent minors from gambling.
Minors Allowed to Play at Great Canadian Casinos
AGCO’s investigation revealed that minors were able to access the gambling facilities and partake in gambling activities at Great Canadian Entertainment’s Toronto-area casinos, including Casino Ajax, Pickering Casino Resort, and Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto.
Two of the instances occurred at Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto, while the other properties each had one violation. The AGCO emphasized the importance of upholding high standards for gaming operators in Ontario and reiterated its commitment to reducing gambling harm.
According to AGCO’s regulations, casino employees must be competent, skilled, experienced, and well-trained to verify the identity and age of visitors and to prevent underage and self-excluded individuals from gambling.
Fines Imposed on Each Casino
The AGCO fined Casino Ajax and Pickering Casino Resort CAD 50,000 each for violations of specific sections of the Registrar Standards. Great Canadian Casino Resort, near Toronto Pearson International Airport, received a slightly larger fine of CAD 51,000 due to multiple violations.
Under Ontario rules, Great Canadian Entertainment has the option to appeal the monetary penalty to the Licence Appeal Tribunal (LAT), an independent body from the AGCO.
Registrar Schnarr’s Statement
Dr. Karin Schnarr, AGCO’s CEO and registrar, emphasized the obligation of Ontario casino operators to prevent underage gambling. She stated that operators must ensure that minors are not allowed to access casino areas or participate in gambling activities, such as slot machines and table games.
Dr. Schnarr also mentioned that the AGCO will monitor and hold all casino operators accountable for fulfilling this crucial responsibility.
The announcement of the fine on Great Canadian Entertainment comes shortly after the AGCO settled a case with Woodbine Entertainment related to previous horse-related incidents.
