AUSTRAC Urges Inactive Digital Currency Exchange Firms to Take Action
The Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC) has recently initiated a campaign targeting inactive digital currency exchange (DCE) firms, urging them to either use their registrations or risk having them canceled. This move, known as the “Use it or Lose it” campaign, also extends to crypto ATM providers, as highlighted in AUSTRAC’s official statement.
Identification of Inactive DCEs
Currently, there are 427 registered DCEs in Australia, all of which must be registered with AUSTRAC to offer exchange services. However, not all of these registered firms are active. Thomas highlighted the risks associated with cryptocurrencies, including money laundering, scams, and money mule activities. By canceling the registrations of inactive DCE businesses, AUSTRAC aims to eliminate vulnerabilities that criminals could exploit to launder illicit proceeds. This proactive measure will enhance the integrity and accuracy of AUSTRAC’s register.
AUSTRAC retains the authority to cancel registrations if there are reasonable grounds to believe that a business is no longer providing DCE services. Inactive firms are encouraged to reach out to AUSTRAC for registration cancellations, with the reassurance that they can re-apply for registration in the future if circumstances change.
Establishing a Publicly Searchable DCE Register
In addition to addressing inactive DCE services, AUSTRAC plans to establish a publicly searchable DCE register. This initiative will allow citizens to verify the legitimacy of cryptocurrency providers and confirm their compliance with regulatory standards.
Thomas emphasized the importance of driving criminals out of the industry and ensuring that legitimate cryptocurrency providers are registered and subject to regulatory oversight.
