FGCC Cracks Down on Illegal Online Betting Operators in Florida
In February 2024, the Florida Gaming Control Commission (FGCC) took a strong stance against illegal online betting operators targeting Florida residents. According to Florida law, engaging in such activities is considered a felony offense under § 849.14 of the Florida Statutes. In response, the FGCC sent formal warnings to the parent companies of these platforms, urging them to comply with state regulations.
Strict Regulatory Framework in Florida
Ross Marshman, the executive director of FGCC, highlighted the limited legal gaming options in Florida. With only 14 legal slot machine businesses in the state, including those operated by the Seminole Tribe of Florida, Marshman emphasized the importance of abiding by the law.
He also mentioned that the only lawful online sportsbook in Florida is Hard Rock Bet, managed by the Seminole Tribe. Marshman advised Floridians to exercise caution and be aware of the legal gambling options available within the state.
Revenue Generation and Economic Impact
The FGCC underscored the economic impact of legal gaming operations in Florida. While illegal gambling operators do not contribute to the state’s economy, legal betting activities generate significant tax revenue.
For example, in 2024, the Educational Enhancement Trust Fund of Florida received over $240 million in tax revenue from state-licensed slot machine businesses. Over the next five years, Florida is projected to receive at least $2.5 billion from the Seminole Tribe of Florida.
National and Statewide Crackdown on Illegal Gambling
Florida is not alone in its efforts to combat illegal gambling operations. Recently, the Michigan Gaming Control Board issued a cease-and-desist notice to MyBookie, while Bovada has exited several states, including New Hampshire, due to regulatory pressures.
