VGCCC Warns Pubs and Clubs to Obey Trading Hours During Holidays

The Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VGCCC) has issued a stern reminder to state pubs and clubs to adhere to holiday trading hours, especially with the approaching Good Friday and ANZAC Day public holidays. The commission emphasized that failure to comply with these regulations could result in fines and other penalties.
Strict Measures in Place
As the Easter and ANZAC Day holidays draw near, the VGCCC has reiterated its stance on enforcing trading hour regulations during these festive periods. Suzy Neilan, the newly appointed CEO of the authority, highlighted that 14 venue operators were fined last year, collectively amounting to AUD 195,000 for their infringements. Additionally, another 4 operators received warning notices.
The Good Friday, ANZAC Day, and Christmas Day public holidays are crucial days that necessitate clubs to adhere to specific restrictions. While Neilan acknowledged that some operators may not be fully aware of these requirements, she urged them to educate themselves on the rules.
Strict Enforcement and Penalties
“With Good Friday almost upon us, I strongly advise venues to ensure they know, understand, and comply with the obligations of their license and only operate their poker machines during permitted hours,” stated Suzy Neilan, CEO of VGCCC.
In August 2024, new laws were implemented in Australia, mandating venues to shut down their poker machine areas between 4 am and 10 am daily.
The VGCCC has a history of penalizing violators, such as the Melbourne Racing Club, which was fined AUD 60,000 for allowing the use of three poker machines before noon on Good Friday. Other establishments like Hoppers Crossing Club Limited faced penalties for breaching trading hour restrictions on both Good Friday and ANZAC Day.
Neilan explained that the severity of the violation dictates the penalty imposed by VGCCC. Factors considered include the duration customers were allowed to play outside permitted hours, revenue generated during that time, and the establishment’s compliance history.
